Michael Stanwood
A Participatory Musical Romp Around the World
Michael Stanwood’s performances, be they concerts, school
assemblies or workshops, revolve around his wonderful
collection of instruments from around the world. A khaen,
a didgeridoo, an mbira, he plays them all, and in the case of
school or library shows, wants his audience to play them
as well. His programs are unique, and often hilarious. “...a
masterful mix of education and entertainment.” (Emerson
School, Phoenix, AZ.)
A former musical goodwill ambassador
for the U.S. State Department, he is also a five time
winner of Westword Magazine’s Best of Denver, for both his
performances and his recordings. He leads two of Colorado’s
more celebrated bands, The Buzz Band, and Yeahbut
Shoehead, his popular family oriented band, which feature
his award winning childrens’ songs and is a popular addition
at many of the state’s music and arts festivals.
RESIDENCIES
‘Songs to Learn By’ writes songs with students about
subjects they are studying in the classroom. These residencies
have yeilded over one hundred songs that have covered
subjects as diverse as the circulatory system, spelling and
good character traits, and a CD, Living Together on Planet
Earth, released by and available at ChoralWeb.com.
WORKSHOPS
‘Learning to Play the Didgeridoo’ starts students getting
sounds on this ancient instrument and introduces them to
circular breathing, while paying respect to the Aborigine
culture from which it came.
